To Screen or Not to Screen...

It absolutely drives me bonkers to be on the phone...yes, I am part of that generation who texts, emails, etc. rather than actually speaking with another person. There are times however, that yes, speaking with someone is more appropriate but, majority of the calls I receive at work do not fall into that category. Just part of my quirkiness, I do not like to be disrupted to chat with someone on the phone. Besides the fact that any work related information that is sent via email helps keep record of any and all changes, questions and so forth, but it's a great way to CYA and it is easy to find vs. handwritten notes or post its that mysteriously "walk off" and you do not have to spend 10 min or longer trying to remember why you wrote that note down or what it is you were suppose to do. Like most, I have about a million things going on at once and more than one thought running through my head & things are easily forgotten. Below are the main reasons I hate when the phone rings:

Irritant #1: Repetitive calling (or psycho calling) - seriously people, if I did not answer the first time, more than likely I am not going to answer 2 seconds later. Then not leaving a stupid message as to what you are calling about! Anyone who has worked with me knows that I screen my calls - if they don't, then they are not very observant . In the amount of time that you have psycho called (4x in 10 mins) you could have typed out a simple emailed & EMAILED me...probably would get an answer a lot quicker.

Irritant #2: Infamous Paging tactic: so you think that since I did not answer my direct line, calling the front desk to have me paged is the best thing to do...maybe if you want to just piss me off even more. My voicemail states "I'm either away from my desk or on the other line. Please leave a message & I will return your phone call"...where in that statements hints at having me paged? The sky is not falling, there is not a fire & heaven forbid I am on break or in the bathroom. And, by the time you get me on the phone you know that I am not happy with you.

Irritant #3: Causing a commotion (i.e. paging tactic) for a NON-EMERGENCY: If I have to answer a page & all you needed was to ask how the weather is, I might just have to beat you with a stick (ok, not really but that makes me want to punch something). The world does not revolve around you & I certainly cannot (and will not) just drop everything for you because you think it is important...what's that saying? Your lack of planning is not my emergency or something like that.

Irritant #4: Calling & bothering another employee to "transfer" your phone call to me: How rude are you? Did you eat paint chips as a child? My co-workers are NOT your secretary.

Oh the office life...
